Seawall Inspection & Assessment

Seawall Inspection and Condition Assessment

We inspect existing seawalls, bulkheads, marine piles, and waterfront structures for visible distress, deterioration, corrosion, settlement, and repair needs in Southern California coastal environments.

Engineering Review of Existing Seawalls

Existing seawalls and bulkheads can deteriorate from saltwater exposure, chloride intrusion, reinforcing steel corrosion, tidal cycling, wave action, soil pressure, drainage problems, scour, and long-term movement. A seawall inspection helps identify structural and durability concerns before they become larger repair or permitting issues.

Blue Horizon Consulting Engineers Inc. provides seawall inspection and condition assessment services for waterfront property owners, property managers, contractors, architects, marina operators, and project teams preparing for repairs, remodels, Coastal Commission review, or local agency submittals.

Inspection Scope

What We Look For During a Seawall Inspection

Concrete Distress

We review visible cracking, rust staining, honeycombing, construction joints, patched areas, and signs of progressive deterioration.

Corrosion and Durability

We evaluate corrosion-related distress at reinforcing steel, anchor plates, steel piles, sheet piles, and other marine hardware exposed to saltwater or coastal air.

Movement and Stability

We observe leaning, bulging, settlement, rotation, loss of backfill, drainage concerns, erosion, scour, undermining, and conditions that may affect the stability of the wall.

Seawall Repair Planning

After the field review, we can help determine whether the seawall may require maintenance, localized repair, structural strengthening, concrete repair, drainage improvements, or replacement. Repair concepts may include reinforced concrete repair, shotcrete facing, steel reinforcement, corrosion protection, and shoreline stabilization.

Reports for Permitting and Coastal Review

Seawall condition assessments are often needed for waterfront remodels, deck improvements, floating dock projects, seawall repairs, and Coastal Commission or local agency review. Our reports can document observed conditions, summarize engineering concerns, and support next steps for repair design, replacement planning, or permit coordination.

  • Seawall inspection reports
  • Bulkhead condition assessment reports
  • Coastal Commission report support
  • Existing structure evaluations
  • Sea level rise and wave exposure coordination
  • Coordination with contractors, architects, and owners

Typical Structures We Inspect

  • Concrete seawalls and bulkheads
  • Steel sheet pile walls and walers
  • Marine piles supporting floating docks and piers
  • Waterfront retaining walls and edge conditions
  • Seawall tie rods, tiebacks, anchor plates, and hardware
  • Drainage outlets, weep holes, backfill areas, and visible scour zones
